Application Note: Fiber Optic Cable Care
This application note provides guidance for fiber optic connector and cable care. Please be aware that fiber optic connectors and cabling are rugged and robust but still must be treated and handled properly to insure long term performance and reliability.
Users need to properly install and care for fiber optic connectors and cable in order to prevent damage as well as minimize any excess optical loss through the cable. Keep in the mind the following 4 rules:
1. Abusing the optical cable, sharp bends, etc. can induce additional optical loss (micro bends) that might affect system performance if the added loss pushes the optical link losses beyond the system loss budget.
2. Excessive bending can cause the internal fibers to break, making the system inoperative.
3. Optical connectors should be inspected, cleaned, and then reinspected before mating. Do not use alcohol wipes as these leave a residue. See recommendations in the next section.
4. OPTICAL CONNECTORS DO NOT REQUIRE MAINTENANCE! Leave connections alone unless there is an operational reason to disconnect. Then go back to Rule 3 – inspect, clean, and inspect again – before mating.
The application note also provides recommendations for fiber optic cleaning and inspection tools with their links to products available on AMAZON.COM.
