FOTEMP Temperature Probes

The FOTEMP TS series fiber optic temperature probes are true absolute temperature sensors which are 100% optical, providing immunity to electromagnetic fields, rf fields, high voltage, microwaves, and much more. The various TSx models are optimized for specific applications.

The temperature probes consist of a gallium arsenide (GaAs) crystal mounted on the end of an optical fiber. This base construction is easily observed with the “bare” TS2p sensor to the right. The GaAs crystal is the black dot at the tip of the TS2p probe. In operation, the FOTEMP unit illuminates the GaAs crystal with broadband light and the reflected spectrum is interrogated. The cut-off wavelength between reflected and absorbed spectrum is directly related to the intrinsic GaAs band gap energy and absolute temperature

element (GaAs crystal) is always located within 1-2mm of the tip.
Measuring Range

Most sensors have a measuring range -200°C to +300°C, which breaks down to continuous operation from -200°C to +250°C and short term operation (<1hr) between +260°C to +300°C. The measuring range of a FOTEMP signal conditioner depends on the Calibration Option selected for that unit:

  • Basic, Cal A1= -20°C to +150°C,
  • Standard, Cal A2= -40°C to +200°C
  • High Temperature, Cal B= -40°C +300°C
  • Extreme Temperature, Cal C= -200°C to +300°C
Measurement Uncertainty (Accuracy)

Measurement Uncertainty is based on the specific TS Probe and CAL Option of the FOTEMP Unit. Internal
measurement is based on 16 calibration points spread over the CAL wavelength range.

The following Measurement Uncertainty (1σ, 68% of all values) applies to stock FOTEMP units and TS probes
calibrated at the Optocon factory:

  • FOTEMP-PLUS-P0-V-B (Cal B) with TS3-15MM-02 or TS5-20MM-02 sensors
  • Also applies to special order FOTEMP units (H2, MINI3, OEM, T2, T3, Modular)
  • ±0.5 K over-40°C to +0°C
  • ±0.2 K over +5°C to +95°C, 1σ) for Original Factory Calibration, FOTEMP unit and TS sensors
  • ±0.5 K over 100°C to +250C)
  • ±3 K (over 255°C to +300°C)

Add 1 K to the above for FOTEMP units and TS sensors paired via One-Point Calibration. As described above, this applies to FOTEMP models purchased with other than TS3-15MM-02 or TS5-20MM-02 probes

Need special TS Probe configurations (special L, L1 lengths)?

For special TS sensor configurations (L1 Extended Tip Length, L Overall Length), please contact Micronor Sensors sales with your requirements. The following list focuses on our standard stock 2m product but 5m lengths are also available in small quantities, or else can be special ordered. Maximum TS probe length is 20m.

Long length TS probes are not always required when need to operate over longer distances. Consider using a less expensive 2m stock probe and using FOTEMP DIST Extension Cables (3m, 5m, 10m or longer) to extend longer distances (up to 2000m).
